Wolf Bargain(Teo Heng Porridge Stall)

Since the start of Covid 19, everyone is banned from singing karaoke in a public entertainment outlet. The consolation is to have a similar sounding name of Teochew porridge. This Teochew porridge at Hong Lim Food Centre share the same name as the karaoke music box, Teo Heng. The hawker stall is unremarkable, hide in a cold corner on first level of the food centre. One would probably miss the stall if you got quick feet. The Teochew porridge is one of the most authentic. I like it for its purest form. No fancy stir fried, no deep fried food, no other things that was not supposed to be associated with Teochew porridge can be found.

(The heavenly tasty “Kat Kat” fish)

Fish and braised foods with dark soya sauce dominate the display shelf. The highlight of our order is boiled “Kat Kat”fish(similar sounding name as Kit “Kat”). I was told it was rarely available. I ask the stall owner what is the official name in English and Mandarin. He say” I don’t know” but he mention the fish make a “kat kat” sound when caught. The fish is very tasty, it is as good as eating it fresh out of the sea. It is cooked in a pot of boiling water. The meat is smooth white, no fishy smell, one could taste the freshness of the ocean. It is quite meaty for a small fish, very few bones. The topping of preserved sour vegetables elevated the taste of the fish to another level. Simply Shiok!

(Best chilli for Teochew porridge)

Fish Cake, Braised Meat and Eggs, Tau Pok, two bowls of porridge round up our order($18). Steamed Sotong and braised duck are worth a try too. The white vinegar garlic chilli deserve special mention . Mildly spicy, the sour taste coming from the white vinegar took away the oiliness and whip up my appetite for more porridge. The Teochew porridge is an all weather comfort food. Rain or shine it will improve anyone appetite. The stall can be very busy during lunch hours, one could see many people from all walks of life congregated near the stall. Before 11.30 am is my suggested timing to go. Great food can now come without the guilt. Now We can all sing along to the tune of good food without the karaoke.
