Commentary Most markets had a volatile March due to SVB fallout and the blow up of Credit Suisse. SVB downfall was a classic case of mismanaging of risks. One been clients concentration risk(tech), the other been interest rate risk and liquidity risk sum up the situation. As a broker previously, we managed all sort of risks beside market risk, the main been credit risks and concentration of clients. In our industry, it is better to have many small accounts than to have one or two large accounts that generated the most income for us. If the clients are too big to fail or exhibit tremendous leverage on your income, the broker run the risk o

Wolf Money(portfolio update for end March 2023) part 1 Titanic

Image
Titanic   The year was 1997 when the movie 'Titanic' started its record breaking journey in the box office. This year is the 25th anniversary since the first screening of the movie. In my opinion, the movie is by far the best movie Hollywood had ever produced, the movie had everything going for it, a strong storyline, good emotion, breathtaking cgi, A list casts and great soundtracks, it was a mind bending experience watching the movie. I admit pouring my soul out in the cinema when I was still a young punk finding my way in life. I was spell-bounded by the movie, I even bought an original movie poster.  (I hope the poster is worth as much as the Casablanca movie poster in the future) I took my curiosity further by visiting the Titanic museum in Belfast, Northern Ireland, the birthplace of The Titanic. Harland & Wolff gantry cranes stood proudly on site reflecting the rich heritage of Northern Ireland ship building history. The movie scene of the ocean liner hitting the ice

There is a very useful feature in iPad and IPhone. A particular function call speak screen which allow the page to read out. This allow users to listen to my long blog, similar to audiobook. There are a few steps to set up Step 1 Click Accessibility Step 2 Click Spoken content Step 3 Click Speak Screen and Speak Selection. Step 4 Use two fingers to swipe down from the top of your screen to activate the function. Step 5 A control bar will pop out which allow you to skip paragraph or increase the speed of read. Wolf Money(Singapore Trading Festival 2023)

(SGX digital wall) (Programs)  It had been at least 4 years since I last attended a SGX organised event physically. No thank in large part by the covid restrictions. Given the long absence, I was pretty excited to attend the Singapore Trading Festival seminar at SGX centre in person with a couple of my ex colleagues. There was a sense of anticipation. The event was well received by the public as full attendance was assured. The effort and the amount of detail that went into making the event a success starting from door gift to food preparation to the specially curated programs is commendable. There are further events throughout the week. Please check the link below. (Panel of experts) The general mood of the guest speakers were cautious. Questions on bank failure and its implications were coming thick and fast from the audience. There were further questions asked on the state of reopening in China after 3 years of covid lockdown and the direction of the interest rate cycle. Most speake

I was drawn to the book by Kamal Gupta in most part by its title ‘Play It Right’ The Remarkable Story of a Gambler Who Beat the Odds on Wall Street. Gambling and Wall Street made an interesting concoction for the storyline. The book has that personal biography feel. It talks about the life story of the author. I will skip the growing up part and jump right into the world of blackjacks and Wall Street.  The author graduated with top grades from Indian Institution of Technology. He was never keen in his field of study, going to America was his only hope of getting out of poverty. He started a job as an engineer with Honeywell in the 80s which come with an annual salary of 37k, a high benchmark for a foreigner coming into America getting his first job but that was not what he was looking for. The job was dry and monotonous, he quit the job after 2 years.  The ability for him to gain an edge over the house attracts him to the game of Blackjacks. He very much prefer the game due to the po

The yield of 10 years SGS which the SSBs took a reference from had fallen off the cliff in a matter of a week. It was trading close to 3.4% just over a week ago and now the yield on 10 years SGS is below 3%. There is a flight to safety due to the uncertainty surrounding the financial soundness of some banks in US and Europe. SSBs average 10 years yield for the month of April is a decent 3.15%. I am expecting next month SSBs yield to drop due to risk aversion in the market. I suspect this month SSBs to be popular. There are 700m up for application. Closing date of application is on the 28th March 2023@9pm. Good luck to those putting in an application.   The school holidays is here. Parent must be pulling their hair on how to keep their kid(s) occupied for the rest of March holidays. My wife chanced upon a day tour to Hay Dairy and Qian Hu fish farm organised by the Residents’ Committee. We paid $5 per person for the trip which include transportation both ways. Do check with your RC if they are organising trips to those farms. I find them educational and excellent value for money. (Billy the goat starring at the Hay) (Son prefer the popsicle to the goat) (Freebies that come with joining the educational tour) Hay Dairies Farm tours are quite therapeutic been able to get away from hustle and bustle of city life is a big incentive to make that 1 hr trip, it is probably the closest place any Singaporean can visit a countryside without leaving the country. The educational tour at Hay Dairy cost $15 per person which was fully subsided by the RC. Each person got a bar of goat milk soap and a bottle of goat milk. Children get an art and craf
