Wolf Money(book recommendation)
I remember when I was serving my National Service 25 years ago, one can always find solace picking up a book to read because there was simply nothing else to do during NS downtime. I was amused by the financial market at a very young age. Opened my first trading account when I reached the legal age of 21. Like many people who had just started out, finding my way into the investment world, I was drawn to Warren Buffett’s investment philosophy. There were plenty of books been written on Warren Buffett business dealings. “The Warren Buffett Way” by Robert G. Hagstrom, “The Snowball” by Alice Schroeder are some books I enjoy reading.
“The Deals of Warren Buffett” The first 100m vol. 1 by Glen Arnold mention the formative years of Warren Buffett partnership to him eventually dissolving the partnership. Most people are familiar with Buffett landmark deals involving Coca Cola, Washington Post and the 26B purchase of Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corp in 2009. The book mention Buffett’s smaller deals which were less discussed. Company like See Candies which turn out to be big winner for Berkshire Hathaway. Most companies acquired by Buffett eventually turnout well. On one of those rare occasion when Warren Buffett didn’t do well for his purchase of Hochschild-Kohn. He bought the struggling retailer for 4.8m in 1969 which eventually sold for a 800k loss 3 years down the road. I am not trying to nitpick Mr. Buffett’s loss but I strongly believe one can learn more from mistakes than the profitable investment one made(I can still remember my biggest loss experience in the stock market but I can’t remember my best trade).
The Author Glen Arnold cleverly summarised each deals made by Buffett in point format which made reading the book a breeze. He also candidly highlighted the secret sauce that made the deal worked. One important takeaway is to only buy businesses with outstanding management you can trust. As Buffett famous quote “A fair management can make a good business fair, a good management can make a fair business good. The book goes on Lone Wolf recommendation list for its ability to summarise Warren Buffett’s deals without the need to plough through thick pages of similar books in the market. A time saver for Buffett aspirants. Happy reading.
