Wolf Bargain(Intellectual freebie)

(NLB e Resources)

This week Wolf Bargain will be something different. I haven’t been trying out new food or found any particular eatery worthy of a recommendation. This week bargain is more towards an intellectual bargain. Free to be precise. Some readers might had known it but I just shared for the benefit of my blog readers.

I enjoy reading the local newspapers especially the business sections but I frown on paying my subscription (sorry to all friends working in the newsroom) due to too much “white politics”  taking up too much real estate in the paper. Who pay for “party paper” now? 😬. What I can appreciate is the insightful market commentary by our Journalists which add depth to the quality of the papers. Thank you for the hardwork, Journalists. Special shout-out for Ben Paul of BT who has the inquisitive mind and guts to ask the tough questions on corporate governance.

My love affair with newspaper especially business news started in Army N years ago. During my NS stint, my main duty revolved me doing some good old fashion guard duties. There were abundance of time on hand to do something else. Flipping newspapers and books seem like the only way to kill time. The only set of Straits Times in the pass office was always missing. Luckily there was a kind Air Force Officer who obliged to pass me his copy and the rest of the other newspapers at the end of his working day. The officer had all sort of newspapers at his disposal, Zao Pao(Chinese Morning Daily), Business Times, Straits Times, Wan Pao(Chinese Evening Tabloid), Berita Harian(Malay Daily) and sometime the odd Financial Times and Wall Street Journal(I suspect he is a stock market participant or his family is involved in newspapers distribution). Thank you Captain for the generosity.

A good part of my interest and my self taught knowledge about the stock market came from extensive reading of financial newspapers during my 2.5 years stint in the army. (I may just write an article on my road to becoming a stock broker which involved this interesting period in the army).

For the past couple of years due to Covid, National Library Board had an arrangement with SPH to provide free ecopy of the main local newspaper via NLB eResources. One could easily access all electronic copies of the major newspapers with a registered NLB account. The account is free. The saving and the intellectual benefits of reading the newpapers can’t be understated. The combine of ST and BT subscription amount to $237.6 yearly or $19.80 a month. That is good money saved for coffee. The saving will be substantial if your family read newspapers of other languages, it is great for seniors looking to save some money. Even thou Newspaper had loss its importance as the prefer media to disseminate information to the masses but they still play an important role of disseminating critical information for informed decision making. The knowledge acquired from reading financial newspaper are permanent. Reading the newspapers since NS days had become my daily routine, in process making me a better informed investor. From now, I hope you will enjoy reading the newspapers as much as I do given there are no excuse of expensive subscription to deal with. Read to Reap!
