Wolf Money(book recommendation)

“Little Book of Hermes” The Story Of The Iconic Fashion House by Karen Homer is an unofficial and unauthorised book looking into the history of the brand. This particular book had a lot going. One can consider it as an Art book due to the amazing photos(the artistic director of the book did a wonderful job). One can consider it a business and marketing book, the detail of how Hermes builds its business empire and brand around exclusivity is worthy of a case study in any business school. It is also a history and mini coffee table book combined.

(The beautiful Audrey Hepburn, a client of Hermes)

(Grace Kelly,Princess of Monaco which gave rise to the Kelly bag of desire)

(The most expensive Birkin sold for £208,175 in a 2017 Christie Auction in HK)

In its founding years, Hermes wasn’t always known for its Kelly and Birkin bags, the epitome of luxury bags. Founded by Thierry Hermes in 1837, the company started out as a humble equestrian supplier with the sole aim of supplying noblemen with good quality saddles. The current logo of the company traced back its heritage as a saddle marker. It is not until 1910s-1930s when the third generation of Hermes family decided to venture into other fine products. They had built a loyal following among The Royals, Queen of England is a client of the brand, The Rich and Famous of Hollywood elite were among the illustrate clients of Hermes. In 1937, the first Kelly bag was born as the brand looked to diversify out of their core business of making leather saddle as horse riding had fallen out of favour with the invention of motor car. The Kelly bag was formerly known as Sac a Depeches. In 1956, Grace Kelly, Princess of Monaco 🇲🇨 was seen carrying one and the name Kelly somehow stuck. It was not until 1977 when Hermes officially named the bag as Kelly. Want a Kelly? It takes 6 years to get one made but first try getting on the vvip waiting list which required a good amount of spending. 😅

The brand not only attracts the fashionista, it also attracted the preying tentacles of LVMH fashion empire. Bernard Arnault, CEO of LVMH tried to launch a hostile takeover of the company which resulted in a long running feud and legal problems with the founding family of Hermes, eventually the takeover was pulled. Hermes continue to be an independent company ever since.

The book is beautifully made. There are plenty of informations on the brand history, the celebrities who are associated with the brand, the marketing genius behind the birth of the iconic orange packaging box, the scarf, the Birkin bag are found in the book. The book goes onto Lone Wolf recommendation for its amazingly high quality photos rarely seen in public. The story and history are well put together.
