Wolf Bargain(Yakult Singapore factory tour)

(Giant monument greets the visitor)

Last week I had an opportunity to visit Yakult Factory. My son, a big fan of their beverage was very much looking forward to this free tour. They had recently reopened their factory tour after a 3 years break. The factory tour is quite an eye opener.

(The cutesy Mr. Yakult)

The tour was conducted by Mr. Yap from Yakult. He did a half an hour presentation on the company history, products and the health benefits of drinking Yakult. Yakult first set up its factory in Singapore under a joint venture with Cerebos Pacific(used to be one of my favourite listed company in sgx) in 1979. In 2003, the parent company had decided to buy over Cerebos stake in Yakult to make it a wholly owned subsidiary.

(The legendary doctor who discovered L.Casei Shirota)

(Close to 90 years of history)

I am mightily impressed with the explanation on area which lactobacillus casei shirota(a good bacteria named after Dr. Shirota) can help digestion and improve bowel movement. It was mention in the presentation, there are close to 1.5kg of bad bacteria in our body if we lined them up, it formed a 2.5x round trip around the world. Drinking Yakult everyday helps fight that evil bacteria. Strange enough, I already felt much better after sipping a bottle then again it might be just placebo effect doing its work 🤷‍♂️. We also found out some interesting fact about Yakult sold in Singapore. Singapore is the only place in the world where 4 flavours are sold. It added another feather to our hat in a long list of first in Singapore.

(Huge silo of Yakult)

The ingredients that make up the Yakult drink are stupendously basic. It includes Lactobacillus, Skim Milk and Sugar. The good bacteria were cultivated in house for 48 hours to ensure quality before they are injected into the huge silo of skim milk to begin the fermentation process. Yakult Singapore is very strict with quality control to the point of making their own bottle. Mr. Yap took us through the factory floor to see the whole process of making that magical beverage. I am fascinated by the amount of precision engineering in every process to achieve the finished product. Japanese and Singaporean manufacturing prowess at its best.

(Yakult galore)

(Special edition not found in retail shop)

The taste test is the best part of the tour. Freshly made Yakult were served to all tour participants. Son had a serving and “dapao” an additional. All participants are given a keychain each at the end of the tour. We are able to buy some freshly made Yakult from the factory. There is one particularly version named “Yakult light” which is not available in retail store. It had all the goodness of the original Yakult plus vitamin D minus the extra sugar. It tasted more sour than the standard version.

Yakult Factory Tour is highly recommended for everyone, young and old. The tour is fully booked till end of Dec. They are looking to open up more tours next year. The tour is perfect for the next school holidays. Slots are limited and patience might be required in such instance. Our family enjoyed the tour for its educational aspect. Detail of tour is listed in the link below.
