Wolf Money(book recommendation)

The book “Get Rich or Lie Trying” Ambition and Deceit in The New Influencers Economy by Symeon Brown discussed the ills bought on by social media. What drew me to the book was due partly to my hobby as a social blogger. The book mentioned some interesting stats. A survey was done recently in UK, more than 1 in 5 millennium, those born between 1980-1996 want to be a social media influencer on Instagram,Tik Tok or Snapchat as a full time job. It is the hottest aspiration among young adults. I can see the alluring draw given it is common to see successful social media stars flexing the nice trimmings of life on social media. The image of a well known influencer showing off a new bungalow or flashing their new G wagon were aspiration for future influencers wannabes. Unfortunately for every successful social media influencer, there were millions that fall wayward struggling to gather enough followers needed to go viral. In the world of social media, we are either a influencer or been influenced by someone on our buying decisions and our thought process.

The book discussed the crazy things people do just to get themselves viral. It goes into the topic of irresponsible corporations preying on young female adults desire to be famous by offering free unregulated cosmetic surgery to boost their social media present among the young female demographic. Disfiguring and close brush with death were common after the free surgeries. Clothing companies offering influencers with free clothing from overseas manufacturing source with questionable ESG practices just to get more people to buy their dubious products. There were plenty of fake experts gurus and prophets selling  “get rich quick” courses through social media. Most people who fall for it happens to be young adults and the most vulnerable of our society. Some are promise of a position as trader in the bucket shop where salary were only given if they managed to sign people up for the guru course. 86% of sign ups paid thousands for the expensive trading course ended up losing money with some losing all their hard earned saving speculating options, stocks or FX. Those lucky few who managed to turn in a profit trading made an average profit of $52, quite far from the millions promised during the course.

The author was apathetic to the situation where the young and the poorly educated wanted a way out of a tough life in UK through social media. Years of poor economic growth had lead to a generation of youth seeking alternatives to low paying job in a fast food joint. A lot of youths saw social media as their golden ticket out of poverty. Wannabe influencers deploy sexual content, racism and extreme methods on platform like twitch and only fans to get more subscribers. Some influencers pay for traffic just to get enough viewers even if they risk the ban from the social media platform. A ban on the social media platform can even be a bankable social media event where influencers cash in on their own soap opera. There are no limit on how low morally people can go to get eyeballs to their social media. In the age of social media, controversy, racism, sexuality and sensation sell, sometime for a pretty penny. Although most of author’s case studies were negative but there is a case of an introvert finding her self worth in social media championing for worthy causes for greater good.

I would strongly encourage anyone who wish to start a social media influencing career to read the book. There are plenty of case studies and drawbacks to reconsider those decisions. The book goes onto Lone Wolf recommendation for providing an insight to the dark world of social media influencing.
