Wolf Bargain(Van Gogh : The Immersive Experience)
My lovely wife knows I am an art lover so she bought us tickets to the Van Gogh, The Immersive Experience Exhibition held at RWS, Sentosa. Each weekday ticket cost $36 and come with a VR experience.
Let’s get a couple of imperfection out of the way. The exhibition is held at Resort World Sentosa, slightly out of my way going to pleasure island. One small disappointment, none of Vincent Van Gogh’s genuine masterpiece was on display. I know it is going to cost the exhibitor more than a pretty penny to bring in all the masterpieces but surely just one genuine work of Van Gogh going on display would had elevate the experience. Is it still worth getting the ticket without the Van Gogh genuine work? Read on.
I am actually quite pleased with my experience. I think the organiser had achieve certain success in showcasing Van Gogh’s life as an artist. At the entrance, the colourful mural of Van Gogh’s Sunflower will brighten anyone’s day. Sunglass wearing Bunnies, dressed in Van Gogh prints would bring a smile to any kid. A long corridor displaying some of Van Gogh’s many self portraits greeted us the moment we stepped in. Given his relative short life, Van Gogh was prolific with close to 2100 pieces of paintings completed. Most paintings were drawn during his last 2 years as an unknown artist before his death from a self inflicted gunshot wound in 1890. He was then 37 years old. There were heart warming stories about his brotherhood with Theodorus Van Gogh told by their corresponding letters . There were discussion about his time at a psychiatric hospital in St. Rémy where he produced some of his best artworks. The love affair for Sunflowers came from painting still life, sunflower with its unmistakably bright yellow gave the artist many ways to experiment with colours. He was known as “The painter of Sunflowers”. The Sunflower motif also give birth to Vincent Van Gogh association, one of the most important post Impressionism master in the 19th century.
As one would expect, a lot of digital experimentations drive the core theme of the exhibition. From video documentaries telling the life story of the famous artist to the two storey 360 degree projection walls that give the visitors a moving 3D light display of his famous works. Beach bench provided are quite comfortable for long hours of viewing. The VR experience, worth every bit of the ticket was mind boggling given it was my first experience in a VR headset, it felt so surreal with Van Gogh’s famous artworks flashing right in front of my eyes, it felt like I am walking right into his painting. The vibrancy of Starry Night was beautifully digitally enhanced, moving the visitors into a whimsical digital wonderland. Visitors were require to sit down for safety reason. The exhibition was wonderfully curated and it does whipped up my desire for a visit to the actual Van Gogh’s museum in Amsterdam. The exhibition provides a cheaper alternative into understanding Van Gogh’ life without flying into Netherlands. As the night falls, the song Vincent by Don McLean came to my mind ........starry starry night, paint your palette blue and gray......as we say tot ziens(goodbye in Dutch) to Sentosa.
