Wolf Bargain(Legendary BKT)

Story

For people who are not staying in Singapore, what the hack is BKT? Be Kind Today? Bangkok Time? Black Rock income trust? By the way BKT happens to be the ticker symbol for the trust. BKT It is an acronym for a Chinese pork ribs soup which we call Bak Kut Teh. We usually had it with a bowl of rice. The soup has a fair amount of heat due to the white peppercorn. Diners can have Chinese Tea with it. Chinese Tea is for watering down the taste buds after the meal. Some people who are alien to our food culture might mistook it as pork ribs cooked in tea if one did a direct translation from Chinese language “pork ribs tea”. The tea in this case is complimentary to the soup.

Legendary BKT is a family run business. They have two outlets in Singapore. One in Rangoon Road, the other at South Bridge Road. I was at their South Bridge outlet when I did my food CSI. Not to be confuse with the touristy BKT brand which shared a similar sounding name. This is de genuine place for authentic BKT.

The Deal

They are currently having an all day BKT set promotion which comprise of a bowl of soup, rice and a side dish with drink included . All these for $10++. You can choose one side that include Braised Tau Kee(beancurd skin), Braised Peanuts, Salted vegetable or Braised Tau Pok(beancurd puff). The promotional set is only available at their South Bridge Road outlet.

Taste

The soup is flavourful. It come with 4 big pieces of pork ribs which almost filled up the entire soup bowl. The meat is well boiled and soft. You can definitely taste the peppercorn in the soup but it has the right balance which doesn’t overpower the taste buds. The rice is fluffy. The beancurd skin is savoury which goes well with white rice. I ordered a home made bailey drink that come with the set. One could have the option of having Chinese Tea. Total bill add up to about $12 with tax and service charge included.

Summary

The price is very reasonable. A meal of BKT without the side and drink would have set you back around $8-9 in any food court or coffeeshop. At $12 it is a steal for the quality of food they served. I am mighty impressed with the good cleanliness and service. The staff do come regularly to top up my soup. I am sure I am not the only one which walk away impressed. On the wall you can spot many local and foreign celebrities customers taking photos with the owners as a sign of their approval. For your BKT fix do visit them at the following address.
