Holiday Musings

I took some time off from the market. There were times I wanted to jump back into the market to make a quick buck. I reminded myself the importance of “work(invest) life balance.”

(Will Butler, CEO of Brompton, my favourite gentleman from London)

Hi AI,

I took the opportunity to meet people. Some are leaders in their field. One such meetings was with Will Butler, CEO of Brompton, during a company event celebrating their 50th Anniversary of their founding. Brompton has come a long way from a garage invention to a multi-million dollar enterprise. We discussed how AI is going to be big opportunity for the business and ways to improve the current process to make customer service better. One idea I shared is to make customer service better through camera technology. It recognised the identity of customers walking into the store. Data like customers’ information with past purchases and bike servicing records could be autopopulated onto a staff’s smartphone without human input. Other topic included the positive outlook for Brompton Bicycle in China. It is an important market for Brompton. The Chinese are going back to their roots of getting on a bicycle, just like they did 50 years ago. The resurgence to reclaim back the title of “The Land of the Bicycle” is slowly underway. I also feel with the growing middle class in India. The country might be the next frontier for Brompton. I hereby wish Brompton a jubilant Jubilee with more exciting innovations in the future.

Hi New Age Broker,

My broker friends had all made good income in the past few months due to the bull market. It is a welcome boost to the people working in the brokering industry. The profession is evolving. As the commission continues to be under pressure due to competition from new-age brokerage firm. Brokers are undertaking more financial sale through selling of unit trust and insurance to increase their income. It is heartening to see brokers evolving into ambassadors for SGX. They are the touchpoint for the latest development and products in our market. They are the leading spokespeople for sectors like REITs and ETFs.

Hi Delicious Food,

(Very reasonable pricing)

A holiday can’t be called a holiday without some form of feasting. My family had a nice buffet at Swensen’s. The prices are very reasonable with each person paying $38(weekday dinner) excluding taxes. Children get a discounted price of $25. We had a ton of food. The buffet is decent without cheap carb dominating the spread. Roast beef, curries, fried chicken, laksa, pizza and over 30 types of ice-cream to choose from. I heard the management came out with this value for money buffet to disrupt the market. Given it had been in operations for more than a year. The response has been overwhelmingly positive. Queues were forming at 9pm when we left the restaurant. A good concept at the right price can bring back diners in numbers. Swensen’s is operated under Singapore-listed ABR Holdings.
