Wolf Review(The Pocket Tiffany by Caroline Young)
The Pocket Book on Tiffany & Co by Caroline Young gives a concise overview of the history of Tiffany. Tiffany is known for its fine jewellery and quality luxury products. From diamond to the little blue box, in the process bringing joy to millions of ladies.
The journey of Tiffany started in Killingly, Connecticut, US. At the age of 15, Charles Lewis Tiffany managed the family general store and the family cotton manufacturing business. He had great ambitions of setting up his own company, which he later founded together with John B. Young, his childhood schoolmate, with the help of a $1000 loan from his dad. Tiffany’s journey to becoming one of the world’s most admired brands began in New York in 1837.
The former name of Tiffany & Young gave way to Tiffany & Co after co-founder, John Young decided to sell out. With sole ownership, Charles began experimenting with unique marketing strategies. Direct mailing catalogue was revolutionary at its time. The title “Catelogue of Useful and Fancy Articles” became a collectors’ item, a much-highly anticipated annual event.
Tiffany & Co broke new ground by being the first to adopt the British 925 standard for silver. In 1940, the company opened their iconic flagship store with its iconic clock, at the corner of 57th Street and Fifth Avenue. The store provided the scene for the famous movie “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” starring Audrey Hepburn. The movie was an instant success. The store is a piece of pop culture and an important landmark in NYC.
The status of the brand was apparent among the elite and Hollywood stars. Countless actresses had graced the jewellery provided by Tiffany. Other prominent actresses include Liz Taylor and Lady Ga Ga. Even during the Cuban Missile Crisis, President John. F. Kennedy gifted his advisers a sterling silver paperweight. The brand continued to be the favourite among many U.S. presidents. A magnificent feast achieved by few in the luxury industry.
The brand has kept pace with time. The Blue Box Café, opened in 2017 inspired by the movie, “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”, offers diners a unique experience into the ecosystem of the brand. The café has since become a popular place for wedding proposals. Tiffany & Co has opened a Blue Box Café in Singapore. Someday, I love to try out their breakfast.
The brand is so desirable that it prompted LVMH to pay a staggering US$16b in 2021 for the century-old company, making it the largest deal in the history of the luxury market. This fine pocket book is best summarised by a quote from Charles Lewis Tiffany: “Beautiful design makes a beautiful life.” The book goes onto Lone Wolf Investor recommendation list for its beautiful cover and bit-sized content. God Bless.
