Wolf Money(book recommendation)
“Robert Kuok A Memoir” is definitely worth reading. He is the richest man in Malaysia. He has an empire of businesses under his stewardship. From Shangri la hotels to Wilmar international holdings. From sugar trade to palm oil. He is one of the most legendary Chinese businessman born out of the 20th century.
This book should be recommended as a case study for any top business school. I had the book for a couple of years until I decided to finish up reading the last few chapters recently . I am also grateful to have gotten to know this book through a friend which unfortunately had since pass on. Thank you Mr. Chiang.
The book wrote about his business dealings and the difficulties he faced during his initial year of setting up Kuok Brother company. There are chapters that talk about his personal relationship with key personal in his life. There is also a chapter that wrote about his business dealing in China. He always felt China is his mother land. There was a time in China history where the country was running low on sugar supply. He was asked to assist in securing a big amount of sugar at the best possible price in secrecy as a shortage in sugar may cause social unrest in China. He did it in James Bond style within time and budget. He also manage to make some money through the sugar trade he did for the Chinese government. That whole episode solidified his friendship with the Chinese government. The Chinese government had since seek his wisdom on numerous occasions during their initial years of transforming from a socialist economy to a market economy.
One chapter mention about his Nephew Kuok Khoon Hong whom he praised as the best businessman among all his family members. He was confident enough to invest in Wilmar under Kuok Khoon Hong leadership. He eventually agreed to a merger between Wilmar and Kuok edible oil to form the world largest palm oil company. He see Khoon Hong abilities matches or even surpass his own.
The book is an interesting read to spend time during Heightened Alert. This book goes onto the Lone Wolf recommendation list.
