Chicken Rice set for $6.90 under normal circumstance wasn’t much of a bargain home run, what if I tell you I had the same thing before for $25 at Mandarin Orchard. The cafe which sell chicken rice, curry chicken rice and braised meat rice is head by ex Chatterbox Chef Lai. The cafe is located at The Adelphi mall opposite Funan. Chef Lai Cafe had been in operation for close to 4 years. They do have a good following. It is usually crowded during lunch hour.

The small shop barely had enough seatings for more than 10 people. The eatery is far from the luxurious setting of having Chicken Rice in Mandarin Orchard but the substantially lower price compensate for lack of dining refinement. One could have 3 sets and have spare change. The taste is very similar to Chatterbox. A blind test wouldn’t spot the difference. 

A set come with white cabbage, egg omelette and a bowl of herbal chicken soup. The sides are a good compliment to the chicken rice. Chicken is soft and tender. The chicken skin is soft and melt with every mouth, it felt less oily too. The slightly sweetened soya sauce is unique which balance out the taste. Rice is.........something which “one can eat a lot one lah” you know me huh. The chilli is so good that you can eat it on its own.



Another of Chef Lai’s special, the Curry Chicken. 6 bucks buy you a a bowl with white rice. Portion is decent. Chef uses chicken drumsticks which explain the tenderness of the chicken. The curry is thick but not overwhelming. If you are in City Hall area looking for a quick meal, do head down to Chef Lai Cafe at Adelphi. Chicken rice are served on a limited basis, sold out by 2pm.
