Wolf Bargain(shiok circuit)

(The colourful HDB blocks give Circuit Road estate a distinctive look)

Today Lone Wolf is exploring Circuit Road Hawker Centre. A bit of history on Circuit Road, the road got its name from the road that circle around the HDB blocks which was built in the 60s to house victims of the deadly Bukit Ho Swee fire that wiped out the whole estate in 1961 which left 16,000 homeless.

(The longest Hawker Centre in Singapore stretching more than 100m)

I find the estate alluring as it retains the old charm of early HDB living. The elongated hawker centre stretching more than 100m must be the longest hawker centre in Singapore. The hawker centre is a short walk from Mattar MRT Station along DTL. I managed to find a few delicious gems in the hawker centre.

Ghim Guan Fried Oyster(#01-60)

One can always get a sense of the popularity of this Fried Oysters by the endless decks of eggs stacking up high in front of the stall. The Fried Oyster is one of the nicer one I had recently. The Oysters are big and juicy. There is a balance between crispiness and been too starchy. Good amount of eggs are added. The vinegar chilli goes very well with the Fried Oyster Omelette($5). The Teochews will said “Ho Jia”(tasty) and the Italian, Mamma Mia.

(Hor fun)

(Sweet & Sour pork)

(Jackpot of goodies in a Claypot)

Soon Kee Kitchen(#01-40)

The stall is run by two elderly couple. I didn’t manage to get their name as they were busy preparing food for their customers. I did get a good glimpse of the cooking process. Chef Uncle display good vibe and rhythm during his cooking, an old mastery at work. Given what I seen, I am optimistic about the food, It didn’t disappoint. They were as good as any higher end Chinese restaurant. We ordered 3 dishes enough for 3 persons. Hor Fun, Sweet & Sour pork and Claypot Tofu all for $26. Hor Fun had that wok hei, Sweet & Sour pork is crispy on the outside and soft internally, there is a good balance of the tomato sauce. Claypot Tofu is filled with different types of greens and tofu is well cooked. The Zi Char stall does bring back my memory of how traditional Zi Char is cooked, a sense of nostalgia is assured. It goes to show, good and reasonable priced food can still be found in our heartland.

(The Chendol ascension to the throne is well deserved)

King Of Chendol(#01-97)

To be call King of something, the stall is setting my expectation high. There are plenty of f&b businesses calling themselves Kings or Queens of something, unfortunately most acted like Jester, falling flat on expectations. The “Kingship” is well deserved for this particular Chendol($2.50). The Chendol had a good amount of Coconut Milk, Gula Melaka and generous serving of Red Beans. The Chendol is springing. Durian, Sweet Corn and Attap Seeds are available as add ons. The Chendol is a satisfying dessert to end a heavy dinner.
