Wolf Bargain(Case of the missing Little Thailand)

(Source : Wikipedia Golden Mile Complex will be saying its final goodbye in May)

Since my last case, Detective Lone Wolf had been sitting easy and smacking flies. Today a new case has came to my attention, the case of the missing “Little Thailand”. Little Thailand used to locate at Golden Mile Complex. The place got its nickname for its popularity among Thai Nationals working in Singapore as a choice destination to meet their fellow countrymen. In the eighties and early nineties, it wasn’t as peaceful, it had a reputation of being lawlessness, arm robbery, snatch theft, fights caused by drunken were common during those days. Local residents had it, it was best to avoid Little Thailand during payday where trouble was one arm length away with danger lurking at Gangsta’s Paradise. In the 2000s, situation turned for the better as fewer Thai workers came to Singapore to work due to more attractive wage in their own country. Golden Mile Complex was also one of the earliest mixed development. A few listed companies bosses I know had their roots started in Golden Mile Complex, the former “startup” capital in Singapore. People traveling regularly to Malaysia by coaches will be quite familiar with the building.

In recent years, locals had warmed up to Golden Mile Complex as an alternative to cookie cutter shopping mall. The Thai supermarket, cheap Mookata and Thai disco for the young at heart were the main attractions among local patrons. Since the announcement of the en bloc deal, some iconic businesses operated out of Golden Mile Complex had left for greener pastures. I will be tracking down their whereabouts using my James Bond’s gadgetry.

“Victims”- Delicious Thai Food

City Gate

Golden Banana (02-27)

First up everyone favourite banana, Golden Banana had been found at City Gate level 2. Rated one of best secret in Little Thailand, the snack would make everyone go banana. Crispy fried Banana and sweet potato balls attract long Q of visitors coming to Kampong Glam. $4 buy you 12 golden sweet potato balls. Every items are served piping hot as they have no trouble fulfilling the demand of the “murderer”. The crispy banana and golden sweet potato balls had an honourable death in my stomach.

Diandin Leluk Thai Restaurant(01-17/18)

This well established authentic Thai restaurant was one of the pillar of Golden Mile. I am glad to have my first meal in their new outlet. We did an ala carte order, Tom Yam Soup, Oyster Omelette, basil beef rice and Bubur Cha Cha to end our meal . The standard of food is impressively high and the serving is generous. The value proposition is in the lunch set, $8.90 buys you a main, a soup or a side, a drink and a dessert

(Iced cold Thai Bubur Cha Cha perfect for the hot day)

(Tremendous value set lunch for the wallet pinching office crowd)

(Extra!!! I did went back eventually to try the Phad Thai lunch set, superb in value and taste )

Aperia Mall

Thai Supermarket(01-20)

The famous Thai Supermarket is still in process of setting up when I was at the Aperia Mall. It is scheduled to open in May.

New Udon Mookata(119 Lavender St)

(I am puzzle by the interesting choice of name, I wonder if they sell new Ramen🙃)

Just a stone throw away from Aperia Mall, housed in a Georgian style shophouse along Lavender Street is where the popular New Udon Mookata new location. It is very conveniently located if you are on route to visit your friend, Wednesday Addams who lives next door. New Udon Mookata seem like a legit place for some crazy eating and drinking.

The case of missing Little Thailand wasn’t much a case, Little Thailand had spread her wings and broken up into mini Thailand at different locales, not far from the original location. This is your Detective Lone Wolf signing off after another successful case.
