Wolf Bargain(Tenya)
Lone Wolf was invited for a taste review at Tempura Tendon Tenya, Orchard Central. This well known Japanese No.1 Tendon chain was established in 1986 at Asakusa, Tokyo, Japan. The first store in Singapore opened its door in 2020. Within the short span of 3 years, the local master franchisee had grown the number of outlets to 4 with further expansion in the pipeline.
I find the food excellent value for money. A bowl of Tenya Tendon cost no more than a tener, $9.50 to be exact. The pricing is almost similar to having a meal at a foodcourt. The secret to low price which I was told was due to bulk purchasing of ingredients. The owners good track record of running F&B venture and good relationships with landlords allow them to negotiate a lower rental was another factor for lower price. All those cost savings are passed on for the benefit of their customers.
The Food
I ordered a set of Tempura Tendon with Hot Soba set ($13.90), one had the option for cold Soba. The set come with Tempura prawn, red fish, squid, pumpkin and French beans. The light batter used for the Tempuras gave out a satisfying crunch, although they were deep fried, they aren’t heavy on my palate. The special Tendon Tare(sauce) jointly developed with Kinoene give out a unique sweet and savoury Umami that elevated my taste experience. The warm soba goes very well with Tendon. A bowl of Miso soup accompanied the set. Serving size is decent. Free flow of fountain soft drinks cost $2.50 only. Free flow of Green tea(hot/cold) is available at $2.00. I find their $5.50 Kirin Beer(glass)excellent value for money. Overall one could enjoy quality Japanese Tempura Tendon without bleeding the wallet. The restaurant is a great place to bring a family or a date. With its inexpensive menu, now everyone can fall in love with Japanese food again, fall in love with Tenya. This is one legit food you could eat for 10 straight days for the next 40 weeks.
A Career at Tenya Singapore
The Chief Administration Officer of the company, “Major” Ang happens to be an old friend of mine. Our friendship goes back to our days as fellow brokers in the brokering firm. I am pleased to catch up with him over a meal, listening to his passion for the restaurant and his goal of uplifting youths by providing them a chance to have a career in the F&B industry. I am quite heartened to know, his company had structured a career path for people wanting a career with Tenya. Basic salary starts from $2100-$2900. The company offers yearly increment of up to $200 to incentivise staffs to stay and grow with the company. The company has seen initial success in retaining good staffs with its attractive salary scheme and the clear career path provided. He proudly shared the staffs turnover rate was much lower than the industry average. As the company is on expansion mode, staffs with good potential will be considered for management trainee position. He cited a 22 year old staff currently on training to be the future store manager. A store manager can potentially look forward to a salary scale of between $4300 - $5000. I like businesses that focus on uplifting their staffs. Singapore can do more with a lot of expertise in running restaurants given our country is known for our culinary excellence.
