Wolf Bargain(Hawker Gems, Cheap Cheaper Cheapest!)

Some of the best food can be found in hawker centres across the island. There are a couple of hawker stalls that stand out to be fine examples of what cheap and good really means. In Singapore, there are plenty of expensive and good food but hawkers preserving their trade by selling affordable food is a dying breed. I came across 2 stalls that are sticking their necks out by going against the trend of food inflation. They are genuinely passionate in showcasing their culinary prowess and profitability is secondary to them.

Cat in The Hat Bakery

505 Beach Road, Golden Mile Hawker Centre(#01-106)

Operating hours 11am-3pm

I am about to share a secret bargain for French pastries, a Chocolate Tart for $2.50? Madeleines for $1.50 each? Let the cat in the hat out of the bag.

If you are a fan of French pastries, this is for you. Cat in the Hat Bakery is a hawker stall located in Golden Mile Hawker Centre. This new to market pastry shop prides itself for selling hotel quality French pastries at hawker price. The founder, Ellis Ng was a former pastry Chef in some 5 stars hotels. Career spun across top hotels in Shangri-la, Pan Pacific and Mandarin Orchard Hotel before setting up her own bake shop in Golden Mile hawker centre in March this year. The responses had been nothing short of being phenomenal. Pastries were sold out daily by 3pm.

(Presentation is as good as any fine pastries in a 5 stars Afternoon Tea)

(Scones at 30% cheaper than usual)

(Amazing selection of delicatessens at hawker price)

(The popular Lemon Meringue Tart, very balance taste, not too sweet or sour)

(“Financier” for the banker(bottom)

(Great for office tea)

The business is brisk. There are limited pastries on sale due to the time involved in hand making them. The ordering process goes, get a queue number around 10.30am, follow their Instagram live for the latest queue status. Join the physical queue when your number is near and buy what is available. Easy. Not quite. It does require some patience. If one happens to be given the 50ish number, you might left with Hobson’s choice as pastries made daily are on a limited basis. Waiting time can be from somewhere 30 mins to 3 hrs. The Lemon Meringue Tart with its good crust and refreshing zesty taste is the most popular item. A lot of bakers did it too sweet or too sour, it is hard to get the taste correctly balance. I am surprise they manage to pull it off, they are a gem. The Chocolate Ganache Tart that cost $2.50 is a bargain. The Dark Chocolate used for the tart is not overly sweet. The Financier, a pastry with banking sounding name goes well with a black coffee. Madeleines are great for office gathering during tea break. Now everyone can have their 5 stars pastries without the 5 stars price.

Quan Nasi Lemak Economical Bee Hoon

 4A Jalan Batu Hawker Centre(#01-21)

Operating hours 6am-1pm

(Although not as refine as French pastries but Fried Bee Hoon is quintessential Singaporean breakfast)

(Fried Chicken with nice crust)

I am confident this is one of the cheapest breakfast Bee Hoon stall in Singapore. A plate of Bee Hoon with sunny side up, fried fish fillet and chicken wing cost $2.5 in total. I didn’t try the Nasi Lemak, I suspect they might be equally value for money. When I saw previous reviews done on the stall, I was a bit sceptical about the price. Since I frequent that area, I might as well find it out myself. The Fried Bee Hoon is quite tasty, the sides were freshly cooked. This stalls is a lovely, highly recommended. Kindly show some love for the auntie ❤️ and support her if you are on route to East Coast Park for cycling. We need more hawkers like her.
