Wolf Review(Vacay Musings)

(Rasa and its idyllic view)

I did a few short vacations during the December school holidays. Here are the snapshots of my trips.

Shangri-La Rasa Sentosa

The property is well known for its resort-style hotel. My son had a lot of fun at the pool. The food is excellent. One area for improvement is to spruce up the dated hotel rooms. They do need an urgent upgrade.

John Master Organic has an agreement to supply shower gels and shampoo to the hotel. The body wash is perfect. Even my wife, who usually had high standards for her own bathroom wash, praised the body wash for giving her skin a silky feel. Unfortunately, they don’t sell them at the hotel retail store. I got them from Shopee instead. A 350ml bottle will set you back $30.

(John Master Organic body wash gives a nice citrusy smell)

Royal Caribbean Cruise

After the enjoyment we had on our last cruise with Genting Dream. We were back for more on the request of my wife and son to try out the Royal Caribbean Cruise. I admit the service and food are of a different level. Staff is very welcoming and waiters in the dining room exhibit great hospitality. Special thanks to John from housekeeping and Jener from the level 4th dining room for their prompt service. A few areas of improvement in area of providing basic amenities. Toothbrushes, toothpaste and shavers should be a standard feature of any cruise ship. I had to search high and low for one when I reached Penang. The store on board the ship ran out of toothbrushes for sale. Another area of improvement is the pricing in USD. It would be greatly appreciated if prices could be stated in Singapore dollars for the convenience of the majority of Singaporean travellers since the ship sailed out of its home port from Singapore. Staff at retail outlet communicated different pricing for similar item. Transparency in pricing gives confidence to customers to spend. If you are heading to the casino, remember to bring your own USD as bets are placed in USD. The exchange at the casino was a horrendous at $1.46 to USD $1. Jack Sparrow from the Pirates of the Caribbean would have been shocked by that.

My son’s favourite, Adventure Ocean offers indoor play for kids. He had a lot of fun playing and making new friends. The good service on board the ship is greatly appreciated by our family.

(The pool was fun, but less “challenging” according to my son’s words)

Penang

I went to Penang a couple of years ago. This time round we are on a dash as the cruise ship only anchored at port for 6 hours. I wouldn’t go into the many interesting places. My observation of the local economy is positive. Gurney Plaza, which is owned by Capitaland, was crowded on a Wednesday evening. Everyone seems to be in the mood to shop. In 2 short years, prices in Penang had risen to a point, where I can sense the difference. For example, it used to be cheaper to buy at Uniqlo Malaysia due to lower factoring rates. Now the prices are similar to those of Singapore. H&M continues to be the value for money mass market clothing brand.

Prices of Ding Tai Fung were higher by 10%, even though the restaurant prices are still markedly lower than those in Singapore. One thing that never changed is the warmth of the Penang people. I had great conversations with the locals.

Malacca

This was a planned trip since last year. My son wasn’t able to travel due to sickness occurring before our trip. This time round, the trip wasn’t easy either. We have Scoot to “thank” for cancelling our flight. The cancellation was hidden a confusing and thinly veiled email. We had to book a last minute cross border coach service to Malacca, enduring a back breaking 6 hours coach ride in a coach bus good for the 2000s. The lack of upgrade by the leading coach operator was apparent. With frequent flight and the ease of traveling with the opening of RTS. Singaporeans traveling to Malaysia will have better transportation options at lower price. Point to note, prices during the stop over at Yong Peng were generally more expensive. My bubble gum costs 50% more than 7-11. The Malaysian warmth hospitality can be felt throughout our trip. Do watch out the 10 things you need to know about Malacca.

(The bus would had been at the forefront of luxury coach travelling if we can turn back the clock to the 2000s)
