Our time is timed
This topic was something I always wanted to talk about. Our time is timed. The subject of today’s write-up is about time management. I hope the readers indulge me for just once.
I was supposed to meet an ex-colleague for lunch recently. It didn’t turn out well because he was late, even after he had rearranged to a later timing. No sms, try calling him twice, no response. Total MIA. Coincidentally, I met him 30 minutes after I left at a nearby junction. I did register my displeasure with him.
I am not a time waster, neither should anyone be. I always try to be early for my appointment due to the nature of my work as a former broker. Imagine putting a trade 1 second after closing. It can have a catastrophic outcome, financially.
I put my best foot forward to having a good conversation with the people I meet. Most friends can ascertain to that. I have this mantra. If I can’t be on time for my appointments, I can’t possibly be doing great things in life. Controlling time is the easiest of all tasks. It is by far easier to control time over emotions, addictions and diet. With a watch, time management is within grasp. I always feel obligated to be on time because my friends’ time is equally important. I refuse to waste theirs.
If one is not getting a call from your friend for the next opportunity or scoring that interview seems impossible. Better time management might change everything.
Being late for appointment project an impression of insincerity, less meticulous and a lack of discipline are some examples. Even the Big Bang Theory starts with an explanation of time in detail. A great idea from anyone should start by being on time for all meetings and appointments. Mismanagement of time leads to loss of business opportunities and strained relationships. The first few important things I inculcate to my son, beside honesty and showing respect, is to encourage him to be on time for everything. I might be setting an unjustly high expectations, but respect is of a higher order. I remember “confronting” my wife on the same issue on our first date for the same reason. She said she never wanted to see me again, but in the end she became the woman of my life. I am grateful she see the positive side of that conversation. *If anyone can’t find a girlfriend/ boyfriend or a wife/husband, try telling off your date for their lateness. Maybe that may help create more happy unions.
* Just joking, not recommended π
As for my friend, lunch was the side dish. The real loss for not meeting up is the missed opportunity for a fruitful human interaction, which I value greatly. A potential job as a lawyer requires great time management. Meeting clients and having an appointment with the court required meticulous time management. With the best intentions, I wish my friend a successful career in legal. I hope my friend takes it in good spirits if he is reading my blog. π
Another incident involved a late delivery of a gift redemption. I had to wait 60 days for the gift redemption to be effective. The gift redemption was outsourced. The company handling the redemption cancelled the delivery after 8 days because the email wasn’t the same as the bank’s record. It is a total oxymoron. I had delivery issues with an inaccurate residential address, but never with an incorrect email. I suspect data fishing is the culprit here. After multiple calls, I was asked to provide the solution, by doing the submission again. The second time with the correct email, the request got rejected again. The arrangement was an internal problem between the bank and the company in charge of gift redemption. It has nothing to do with the customers.
Sorry for the rant. It is not what I expect from two top local companies. I offer them three solutions. First, change the email on either side, second, by allowing a self-collection at a redemption point or third, by reimbursing the value of gift in cash to be deposited into my bank account. It is hard to believe non of my suggestions were adopted. It is mind-boggling two multi-billion dollar companies struggling to figure out how to send a $500 gift to a customer. The amount of time wasted was incredible, which can be spent on other more productive things. My gift continued to be outstanding even after multiple calls and emails. The manager did eventually called on Tuesday apologising for the situation. I did ask for the delivery to be done as soon as possible, in typical fashion of the bank’s customer service sop, they pushed the fault entirely to the delivery company without providing a satisfactory service recovery. My gift would be delayed and the scheduled delivery will be in April. That is 6 months after the qualifying one. The drive towards a smart nation starts with competent delivery π«€.
Time is such a precious resource. We all have limited time on earth. It is best summarised by a Chinese proverb ζΆε ε¬δΊΊθ, ζΆι΄ζζ ζ . Remember to treasure time. I leave you with a verse in the Book of Psalm 90:12 ; So teach us to number our days, that we may present a heart of wisdom. Go hug your loved one and said how much you love them if you have not done so. Go eat the food you always wanted. Travel to the place you always dream. Tick off the boxes on your bucket list now. Life is short. You only live once. There is no time to waste. God Bless.
